What is gastrointestinal disease?

A gastrointestinal disease also known as digestive disorders is one that affects the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, the passage that runs from the mouth to the anus.

The digestive system is a key player in maintaining overall health as it performs the important job of breaking down food, absorbing nutrients and eliminating waste. The digestive system also protects us by preventing the entry of bacteria and toxins into the blood.

Leaky gut syndrome

Leaky Gut or increased intestinal permeability is a condition wherein the bacteria and their toxic by-products are able to “leak” through the intestinal wall into the blood.

The cells lining the intestine are closely stitched together with the help of tight junctions which only allow water and nutrients to pass through and prevent the entry of toxins. When these tight junctions are disrupted, it leads to “Leaky Gut Syndrome” which can then go on to cause a lot of symptoms like Abdominal Bloating after taking food,Chronic Constipation, Chronic Diarrhoea, Flatulence (gas), Acid Reflux, Belching.

Gastrointestinal Diseases Linked to Leaky Gut

1. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS):

IBS is a functional GI disorder characterized by symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, and constipation.

Leaky gut may contribute to IBS by allowing gut bacteria and toxins to enter the bloodstream, triggering immune responses that affect gut motility and sensitivity.

2.Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD):

IBD includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, both of which involve chronic inflammation of the GI tract.

Increased intestinal permeability is often observed in IBD patients. The “leaky” gut allows antigens and microbes to enter the body, potentially worsening inflammation and disease severity.

3.Celiac Disease:

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder where ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine.

In celiac disease, gluten triggers an immune response that damages the intestinal lining, contributing to leaky gut. The resulting increased permeability can allow more gluten and other antigens to pass through, exacerbating symptoms.

4.Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO):

SIBO occurs when there is an abnormal increase in the number of bacteria in the small intestine.

Leaky gut can contribute to SIBO by disrupting the balance of gut bacteria, leading to overgrowth. Conversely, SIBO can also worsen leaky gut by increasing inflammation and further damaging the intestinal lining.

5.Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS):

NCGS is a condition where individuals experience symptoms similar to celiac disease after consuming gluten, but without the autoimmune response or damage to the small intestine.

Leaky gut may play a role in NCGS by allowing gluten fragments to pass through the intestinal wall, leading to immune responses and symptoms.

6.Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD):

GERD is a condition where stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, causing heartburn and other symptoms.

While leaky gut is not a direct cause of GERD, inflammation and stress on the digestive system can contribute to both conditions, potentially making GERD symptoms worse.
